NEW YORK UND DIE UMWELT

 

Wenn man New York besucht, sieht man gleich, wie groß der Energieverbrauch von der Stadt ist. In fast allen Fenstern gibt es eine Klimaanlage. Die Büros und die Reklametafeln sind morgens und abends beleuchtet am Times Square entlang. Auf den ersten Blick wird viel Energie verschwendet, und die Umwelt spielt keine wichtige Rolle im Leben von der Stadt.

 

Aber die Wirklichkeit ist ziemlich anders. New York gehört zu den umweltfreundlichsten Städten. Der Grund ist, man lebt dicht, außerdem sind die Wohnungen und Arbeitsplätze kleiner als in anderen Großstädten in der Welt. New York hat ca. 8.5 Millionen Einwohner, die Bevölkerungsdichte beträgt fast 11.000 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer.

 

Das wichtigste Verkehrsmittel ist die U-Bahn, in New York sind die 26 U-Bahnlinien1335 kmlang zusammen.

 

Ein New Yorker verbraucht durchschnittlich ca.500 lBenzin jährlich, ein Amerikaner im Durchschnitt2000 l. In New York hat die Hälfte von den Familien kein Auto. 40% von den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln in Amerika findet man in New York und in seinen Vorstädten. In New York verbraucht ein Haushalt durchschnittlich 4700 kW Energie (so viel wie in Deutschland), in Amerika verbraucht ein Haushalt dagegen im Durchschnitt 11.000 kW Energie.

 

Der CO2-Fußabdruck in New York beträgt 7 Tonnen pro Person, der amerikanische Durchschnitt beträgt ca. 22 Tonnen und der europäische 11 Tonnen.

NEW YORK AND THE ENVIRONMENT

 

When Europeans visit New York, they immediately notice, how big the city’s power consumption is. Almost every window has an air-conditioning device. The office buildings and the neon signs at Times Square are lit 24/7. At first sight, huge amounts of power is wasted in the city and nature doesn’t play an important role in the life of NYC.

The truth, however is entirely different: New York is one of the „most environmentally friendly” cities. The reason forth is that people live densely, aside from this flats are smaller and workplaces are as well, than in any bigger cities. NY has about 8.5 million citizens, so the population density is about 11.000 people/km2.

The most important way of public travel is the metro, in NY, the 26 metro lines are 1335 km long in total. A New Yorker consumes about 500 litres of gasoline on average a year, in the USA, the average is about 2000 litres. In New York half of the families have no cars. The American public transport’s 40% takes place in New York and it’s suburbs.

In New York, the average of power consumption in one household 4700kW (the same as in Germany), in America, one household consumes 11.000 kW on average.

The CO2-footprint in NY is 7 tons per people. The American average is 22 tons, the European average is about 11 tons.
